The European Commission issued 12 billion euros of green bonds on October 12, and the funds raised will be used to support and develop the EU's green economy and sustainable investment.
The 15-year green bonds will mature in February 2037. It is estimated that before the end of 2026, the European Unio will issue green bonds totaling approximately 250 billion euros.
European Commissioner Johannes Hahn, who is in charge of budget and administration, said at a press conference held that day that today’s issuance is a powerful start for the EU’s green bond program. "More importantly, we have to make it clear to investors that their funds will be used to finance a sustainable recovery in Europe."
In July 2020, the EU launched an economic recovery plan with a total scale of more than 1.8 trillion euros, including a long-term budget of 1.074 trillion euros from 2021 to 2027, and a 750 billion euro recovery fund. The issuance of green bonds will provide funding for the recovery fund.
