The first "Hualong One" nuclear power unit exported by China, the Karachi Nuclear Power Unit 2 (K-2) in Pakistan, has reached the final acceptance conditions, and representatives from China and Pakistan have jointly signed the final acceptance certificate.
So far, the first unit of my country's independent third-generation nuclear power technology "Hualong One" exported overseas has been successfully completed, adding new achievements to the high-quality joint construction of the "Belt and Road". This acceptance was highly praised by the Pakistani side, who believed that the final acceptance of the K-2 unit was a common honor for both parties. The K-2 unit is a benchmark project on the "Belt and Road" and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
It uses my country's third-generation pressurized water reactor nuclear power technology "Hualong One" with completely independent intellectual property rights. It is contracted by China National Nuclear Corporation China Zhongyuan Foreign Engineering Co., Ltd. Construction started in August 2015 and officially entered commercial operation on May 20, 2021, creating the shortest construction period and best construction performance for the first overseas third-generation nuclear power unit in the world. It won the best practice case of international energy cooperation at the second "Belt and Road" Energy Ministers' Meeting.
It is the first nuclear power unit in Pakistan to achieve continuous operation for 100 days after being put into commercial operation.Since the K-2 unit was put into commercial operation three years ago, with the joint efforts of China and Pakistan, various performance indicators have been gradually optimized, and the operating performance and WANO indicators have been continuously improved, gradually climbing to the world's advanced level. It has generated nearly 23 billion kWh of electricity, equivalent to reducing the annual standard coal consumption by 7.176 million tons and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 18.768 million tons, equivalent to planting 161 million trees, making a positive contribution to promoting the green transformation and development of Pakistan's energy structure.
The experience of the unit in design, construction, commissioning and operation will be used to improve new projects, pave the way for the construction of the Chashma Unit 5 project, and enhance confidence. China-Pakistan nuclear energy cooperation began in the late 1980s. Over the past 30 years, the two sides have jointly built two major nuclear power bases - Chashma Nuclear Power base and Karachi Nuclear Power base, and in 2023, the groundbreaking and excavation of Unit 5 of the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant will be realized, which will become a witness to China-Pakistan nuclear energy cooperation and further promote the development of friendship between the two countries.
