On October 9 local time, the British government said that Britain and six GCC countries had begun preliminary negotiations on a free trade agreement to further strengthen Britain's international trade status after brexit.

Anne Marie trevillian, British Secretary of state for international trade, said that the trade agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council is a great opportunity to realize trade liberalization in the growing market of British enterprises and deepen relations with an area vital to Britain's strategic interests.

In the government statement, trevillian said that the British government hopes to reach a modern and comprehensive agreement to break trade barriers to the food and beverage market, digital trade and renewable energy, so as to provide high paying jobs all over the UK.

Trevillian pointed out that the British government has started a 14 week consultation and called on the public and enterprises to provide reference and suggestions for the government before the negotiations begin in 2022.

It is understood that in 2020, the trade volume between Britain and the Gulf countries will exceed 30 billion pounds (about 41 billion US dollars). The Gulf Cooperation Council includes six countries: Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman.
