Galangal has many culinary and medicinal uses and is often used in South East Asian cuisines. Galangal was widely used in ancient and medieval Europe, both for herbal tea and in the food. St. Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) actually wrote that it had been given by God to provide protection against illness. “The spice of life,” as she called galangal.
Galangal has a positive effect on the blood circulation and the central nervous system. This in turn has a positive effect on mental focus, memory and other functions.
Galangal to be extremely effective in inhibiting platelet aggregation, which under the wrong circumstances can cause blood clots that block arteries and can lead to heart attacks. Thus, it would probably not be a good idea to use this herb excessively if one is already on blood thinning medication
