China will actively strengthen communication and coordination with relevant sides through various channels to play its due role in helping Afghanistan realize peaceful reconciliation and stable development at an early date, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Thursday.
The remarks came after Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, head of the Taliban's political office in Doha, together with his assistants, recently visited China.
During their stay, Chinese officials exchanged views with them on issues including the peace and reconciliation process in Afghanistan and counter-terrorism, spokesperson Lu Kang told a press briefing.
China has paid great attention to the evolution of the Afghan situation in recent years, Lu said, noting that the Chinese side has all along played a positive role in facilitating peace and reconciliation in the country.
China always supports the intra-Afghan dialogue, as well as an 'Afghan-led and Afghan-owned' reconciliation process that is broad-based and inclusive, he said.
Lu said the Chinese side exchanged views with the visiting delegation based on its consistent stance, which was part of its efforts for facilitating peace and negotiation among relevant parties.
Both sides considered the interaction helpful, and they have agreed to keep in contact and continue communication and cooperation on seeking political settlements to the Afghan issue, combatting terrorism and other issues, according to the spokesperson.
