At the "One Ocean Summit" organized by French President Manuel Macron, Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM, announced in his speech that the Fei will not transport any waste plastic cargo on its ships.
With this landmark decision, effective June 1, 2022, the CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics, continues to demonstrate its commitment to protecting the environment and preserving biodiversity.
In his speech, Rodolphe Sade also announced that the CMA CGM Innovation and Training Center will operate in Marseille in 2023, which will also serve as one of two locations for the French Institute for Decarbonization.
Removing plastic waste is our priority to protect our oceans and biodiversity
about 10 million tons of plastic waste end up in the ocean every year. If we do nothing, that number will triple over the next 20 years to 29 million tons per year, causing irreparable damage to marine ecosystems, flora and fauna.
Causes of this pollution include a lack of plastic waste processing infrastructure, which allows waste to be stored in the open and not recycled or reused efficiently.
CMA CGM Group decides to implement zero plastic waste transportation
Given the decision of the CMA CGM Group not to transport plastic waste on its ships, CMA CGM will prevent the export of such waste to destinations wher sorting, recycling or recovery cannot be guaranteed.
Therefore, CMA CGM decided to take practical measures to respond vigorously to the urgent appeal of NGOs within the scope of practicability.
With this decision, the CMA CGM Group is stepping up its efforts to make the protection of biodiversity one of the priorities of its corporate social responsibility strategy and to develop more responsible and fair trade for all people and the planet.
