Prabowo announced the decision that day after meeting with New Development Bank President Rousseff. He said that after evaluation by the Ministry of Finance team, the Indonesian government decided to accept the invitation from the New Development Bank to join the institution and advance the relevant processes in accordance with relevant procedures and requirements.
He stressed that joining the New Development Bank will help accelerate Indonesia's national development transformation. Rousseff welcomed Indonesia's decision and believed that the establishment of a cooperative relationship between the New Development Bank and Indonesia is of great significance. She said that Indonesia's development direction is highly consistent with the New Development Bank's key investment areas, and the two sides have broad space for cooperation in infrastructure, transportation and logistics, digital connections and energy transformation.
The Shanghai-based New Development Bank is a multilateral development bank jointly established by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa in 2015. It aims to support infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS countries and other emerging economies and developing countries. As the rotating presidency of the BRICS countries in 2025, Brazil announced on January 6 that Indonesia became an official member of the BRICS.
